Verizon FiOS – The Fastest ISP on the Block
Over the last decade our world has become increasingly more connected. The Internet has invaded our lives, from email to streaming television. According to internetworldstats.com, as of March 31, 2011, 78.2% of people living in the US have Internet access, meaning they have one or more devices connected to the Internet, which is a 156.9% increase from the year 2000. Those numbers are staggering, and show just how dependent our society has become on the Internet.
Verizon, one of the many Internet Service Providers (ISP), has a relatively new offering called Verizon FiOS, which is outpacing the competition with speeds previously unavailable to consumers. Verizon FiOS is offering Internet access at data speeds up to 150Mbps, which is six times faster than most other broadband (high-speed) Internet Service Providers provide. These staggering speeds are a game changer, and will certainly change the way people use the Internet. It can be thought of as not just another step in the advancement of technology, but a giant leap forward.
So what is the big deal about all this speed mumbo jumbo? Well, that is an excellent question. An important aspect of Internet access is the connection speed, which refers to how fast the data flows between Internet Service Providers and devices connected to the Internet. Connection speed is measured in bits, specifically Kbps (Kilobits per second), or Mbps (Megabits per second). A megabit is not to be confused with a MB (megabyte), and is about 12.5% of a megabyte. A quick illustration to help explain what it all means: if a user has Internet access through some random ISP with a connection speed of 1Mbps, it will take that user approximately twenty-four seconds to download three megabytes – the size of the average song in MP3 format.
Verizon FiOS isn’t available everywhere yet; this is because it is delivered through fiber optic cable which must be buried underground. Verizon is working as fast as it can to roll out the service nationwide, and their efforts are working, as FiOS becomes available to thousands of new customers every day. Hopefully these staggering speeds from Verizon FiOS will cause the other Internet Service Providers to invest in their own, faster technology. Who knows, soon your ISP may be offering Internet access even faster than FiOS, but don’t hold your breath, it probably will not be soon.
