Basically, when one speaks of a regional bell operating company, he or she is referring to a regional telephone company in the United States of America which is one of the many regional telephone companies in that nation. The companies where basically formed when the popular American Telephone and Telegraph Company otherwise known as AT&T, split up. This breakup occurred in December 1983. Of the companies that are there today, there were 7 original ones in the beginning.
Among the 7 original companies were Bell Atlantic, Pacific Bell, US WEST and Ameritech to mention a few. Basically, what happened with these companies is that they had rights to make available local phone services. They also had about 2 operating companies under their name. It is also important to note that apart from the regional bell operating companies that are all over the United States of America, there are also over 100 local telephone companies that are franchised. These companies are referred to as local exchange carriers. In addition to that, there exists what are referred to as competitive local exchange carriers. These are basically in competition with local exchange carriers. As for the interchange carrier, this carrier is long distance and it is responsible for carrying traffic between local exchange carriers.
Basically, a regional bell operating company and local exchange carrier are constantly competing for long distance traffic. As for an RBOC, its main focus is on digital data as well as internet traffic. It is the regional operating companies that are constantly providing people with new technologies as far as telephone carriers are concerned. Some of these new technologies include Ethernet, T1, T3, OCx, MPLS, VPLS, DSL and ISDN. There is some stiff competition that takes place between these companies for long distance traffic. It is also important to note that now, as opposed to the original position; there are only 4 regional bell companies left. This is due to the mergers that have taken place over the years.
