Determining Which Collocation Data Center Is Best For Business

Colocation Data Centers often come in a variety of sizes to meet nearly all business needs. The design, infrastructure, and quality components vary depending upon the individual needs of the client. Thus, there are several things to consider when looking at the best area to house one's technological needs.

There are three basic types of data centers: Class C, Class B, and Class A. Each class has its own set of standards which should be considered based on price, backup power options, and size ranges. Conducting research about the different classes assists a business in selecting the data center that works best for its needs.

Class C Centers are considered the most basic. The majority of these centers are cost effective because they do not offer some of the more expensive service. Class C opportunities are often considered 'stripped down' models which provide the least amount of services for the smallest dollar amount.

Many small businesses begin with this level of service. While there are limitations with this class, some of the most basic services are available which is often enough to give a start-up business a good foundation. One can always move up to a higher class as the company expands.

Class B Centers are the mid-range model of centers. These facilities usually have on-site support; however, the hours are limited to regular business hours. Class B facilities often sport air conditioning, along with redundant air conditioning. However, each suite may not have its own system. For some, this is not a concern because the company has not yet expanded. Another asset with Class B facilities is their fees. While not as inexpensive as Class C centers, they allow a quasi-cafeteria plan in which the client chooses what they will get charged for. This allows small to mid-sized businesses a method of controlling expenses.

Class A data centers are the highest quality. Often, their services are bundled in a manner that promotes tremendous value. Class A facilities offer premier services such as twenty-four hour on-site service every day of the year. The staff are all certified and available when needed at no extra charge.

Facilities include redundant air conditioning for every room, back up power supplies which are good for twenty-four hours, and locking cabinets with raised flooring. With the state of the art technology found in these centers, the pricing is more extensive. However, the quality and the peace of mind provided by the center is often worth the additional cost. The building layouts usually provide additional networks within the building along with ample parking at the location.

Larger businesses or those that rely on superior colocation data centers should critically evaluate their needs. No matter which level of data center is selected, there will be one that is a perfect fit. By evaluating the needs of one's company now, decisions can be made that will grow with it at every stage of its development. Locating the proper prover of the data center is a choice that should be carefully considered and implemented.
