How Your Cable Television Works

When content is delivered to a television set by use of a cable to be watched by viewers it is called cable television. There are different cables used to transmit the signals that eventually become a channel to the television set and the main ones are coaxial and fiber optic.

The coaxial cables operates by sending through a copper wire the radio frequency signal while the fiber optic also called the optical fiber have a core through which the signal in from of light passes through. The advantages of optical fiber out way coaxial and the main one is the optical fibre is not being affected by environmental factors like coaxial therefore better reception.

In the olden days and still used today but with better methods. The path of sight method was the used to broadcast and receive signals from broad casting stations. The viewers antenna had to be in the same path of sight as for the broad casting station's transmitter and the more elevated the receiving antenna was the more advantageous it was for someone. A long cable ran down the hill from the receiver antenna to the television set

There are two types of signals used to transmit channels there is analog signals and digital signals. The digital signal is more modern than the traditional and it is preferred because it can carry more channels than the analog signal in one frequency.. The digital systems are used across multiple countries although, some people are still broadcasting in analog. The TV also has to be compatible with this transmission so an analog TV can watch analog transmission but not digital transmission. Digital televisions can view both transmissions.

A group of channels delivered by one provider are called a package and this term is used to refer to those channels that are paid for by users to providers. The official term refereed to these broadcasters is service providers and they differ from country to country

A package can have as little as 60 to as many as one thousand channels depending with the cost and the content can also vary. The packages can have sports, cartoons, movies and general content which feature a sampling of the other content.

The packages can be grouped in two basic package and premium package. The basic package is free of charge to the viewer and the people who are charged are the advertisers on the television. These adverts help the provider to recover the costs that are incurred and they do not contain many channels having a maximum of about four.

The premium package which has a large collection of channels at about three hundred offer different content. These channels are encrypted so only those who have paid for them can watch and usually have less advertisements. In between shows on these channels there are usually advertising other channels.

The viewer has to pay a monthly subscription fee to the service provider depending with the channels that are chosen in the package for the cable television. The user is provided with a decoder when he joins so as to decode these encrypted channels.
